Today, the sheer quantity of wines imported into the U.S. offers wine lovers an incredible variety. It’s easy to forget, though, that only a few decades ago, wines like Chateau Rayas, Domaine Leroy and Domaine Pegau (to name a few) simply were simply impossible to obtain.  It was thanks to a group of forward thinking importers like Kermit Lynch, Neil Empson, Neil Rosenthal and, starting in 1979, Martine Saunier. Martine made it her mission to bring a new wave of amazing wines to America, and, in the process, changed the entire way we look at, buy and drink wine.  Being a Parisian native, she had the advantage of speaking French and, thanks to her charming way, got the inside track with wine producers who, back then, didn’t even want to sell their wines in the U.S.. She drove her tiny car through the Rhone Valley, Burgundy, Champagne and Bordeaux, knocking on cellar doors without appointments and wound up creating genuine, life-long relationships with many of France’s most celebrated winemakers. She invested every centime she had to import them and the results have made her one of the most important figures in wine today.

Martine is an excellent story teller and you’ll enjoy sharing her experiences.  Her passion is contagious and will fuel the fire for your next trip to Europe.
