SPARKLE THIS

NV Flor Prosecco di Valdobbiadene, Veneto
NV Roederer Estate Brut, Anderson Valley
NV Delamotte Brut, Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, Champagne, France

13.75

Prosecco is a white wine grape that’s grown primarily in the eastern part of the Veneto region.
Prosecco’s made into lightly sparkling (frizzante), fully sparkling (spumante) and still wine. Flor
is the house Prosecco served in renowned Chef Mario Batali’s restaurants. He and partners Joe
Bastianich and Lidia Bastianich (of PBS fame) created this delicate and fruity prosecco to serve
exclusively in restaurants like the revered Del Posto in New York and PRIMA. Taste = robust, floral and mineral notes. Founded in 1981, Roederer Estate is nestled in Mendocino County’s cool,
fog-shrouded Anderson Valley. As the California outpost of Champagne Louis Roederer, Roederer Estate builds upon a centuries-old tradition of fine winemaking. Roederer Estate’s sparkling wines are produced using only Estate-grown grapes from the winery’s own vineyards. Carrying on the tradition of Champagne Louis Roederer in France, special oak-aged reserve wines are added to each blend. Taste = Smooth, rich and creamy, with spicy pear, fig, melon and honesuckle flavors that are fresh and lively, ending with a tasty burst of ripe fruit. Champagne Delamotte is the fifth oldest Champagne house in the region, founded in 1760 and located in the heart of the Côte des Blancs in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Sister house and contiguous to Champagne Salon (among my top 5 greatest Champagne houses), Delamotte produces no more than 50,000 cases annually. All of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes that go into Delamotte’s non-vintage Brut come from Grand Cru vineyards. The Chardonnay comes primarily from three villages, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Oger. The Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards on the side of the Marne river in Bouzy, Tourssur- Marne and Ambonnay. The small percentage of Pinot Meunier that is blended in is from Vallée de la Marne. Delamotte also inherits the wine produced but not used by Salon—in years when a Salon vintage is not declared, this amounts to the entire harvest. Taste = meringue, cashew-nutty, icing sugar, yeast dough; clean apple, lemony taste; relatively dry finish.

THE ITALIAN WHITE FLIGHT

2007 Jermann Pinot Grigio, Collio, Friuli
2007 Terredorra di Paolo Greco di Tufo, Campania
2006 Casamatta Bianco, Toscana

13.00

Silvio Jermann made Italian wine history with his whites, spearheaded by such cult items as
Vintage Tunina and Dreams. Heir to a traditional Friulian winery dating back to 1881. Silvio
overcame his father’s resistance and inaugurated a new era not only for Jermann but for white
vinification in Italy. Since then, the Jermann wines have never ceased to awe and amaze with their
purity and depth of flavor. Taste = bright and fresh with racy apple fruit, juicy acidity, minerals
and a long finish. With more than 275 acres of vineyard land, Terredora di Paolo is Campania’s
largest wine producer and vineyard owner, with a worldwide reputation for the quality of its wines.

It was only in 1994 that they decided to vinify their own grapes. Walter Mastroberardino and his
children Lucio, Daniela and Paolo have put this new winery in the elite division of southern Italian wineries. Greco di Tufo is an ancient white grape that was probably from Greece. Dried pineapple, honeyed citrus and minerals. Casamatta (which translates, literally as “Crazy Horse”) is a Toscana IGT wine, one of the wines in the the portfolio of artist turned winemaker Bibi Graetz in Fiesole, just northeast of Florence. Casamatta Biaco is made from Vermentino grapes, which probably originated in Spain and is also seen in Provence, France (Rolle). Yet, it mostly seen in Sardinia. Taste = super fragrant nose with fresh nectarine, sage, rosemary and lime.

OTHER WORLDLY REDS

2007 J.L. Chave Cotes du Rhone, ‘Mon Coeur,’ Rhone Valley, France
2001 Bodegas Muga Reserva, Rioja, Spain
2005 Lolonis Petite Sirah, ‘Orpheus,’ Redwood Valley

13.40

J.L Chave is one of the greatest producers of Hermitage. They also produce almost every appellation in the Rhone as negociants. The official AOC Côtes du Rhône region stretches 200 km from Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south and from the foothills of the Massif Central in the west to the fore-slopes of the Vaucluse and the Luberon mountains east of the town of Orange. This “Mon Coeur” (My Heart) cuvee is equally Grenache and Syrah. Taste = dark berry/cherry fruit, mocha, tobacco and the ‘animal.’ Muga was founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and his wife, Aurora Caño, both of whom came from families with a long tradition of activity within the wine-making industry. The vineyards of Bodegas Muga are located in the northern region of the province of La Rioja, in the Oja and Tirón river valleys known as La Rioja Alta. At Muga, they make their own oak vats and casks, made from French and American oak and are replaced at least once every ten years. The ‘01 Reserva is an unfi ltered Rioja made from 70% Tempranillo, 20% Grenache, and the rest Mazuelo and Graciano. Taste = raspberries, cherries, graphite, and tobacco leaves with an expansive, medium to full-bodied palate, elegant, lush fl avors, sweet tannin, and hints of cedar and white chocolate. Since the very first vintage in the early 1920s, when Tryfon, Eugenia Lolonis and the eldest of their ten children picked the grapes, harvesting Lolonis vineyards has been a handson tradition. Their family-owned vineyards are located in the heart of Redwood Valley, Mendocino and are certified organically grown (CCOF). In fact, Redwood Valley has the highest number per capita of organically farmed vineyards in the U.S. Orpheus was a legendary poet and musician in Greek Mythology. The wine is a blend of Petite Sirah, softened by notes of Napa Gamay (Valdiguie). Grapes in this wine come from vines planted over half a century ago on the benchlands of Redwood Valley. Taste = big wine, yet classy, black and blue berries, vanilla, rich and soft.

FAB CABS

2007 Waters ‘Interlude,’ Walla Walla, Washingtion
2005 Bennett Lane, ‘Maximus,’ Napa Valley
2006 Justin ‘Isosoles,’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles

17.40

Waters Winery
is a boutique winery located in Walla Walla, a community in southeastern Washington with a rich history, fertile lands and boasting over 100 wineries. Interlude is a blend made exclusively of Bordeaux varietals from numerous vineyards throughout Washington State. The blend is equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a little Cab Franc. Taste = bright red
fruit, earthy fl avors and a creamy fi nish. Rob Hunter joined Bennett Lane Winery as Winemaker
in April 2005. Most recently Rob served as Vice President and Director of Winemaking for Sterling
Vineyards. The blend on the 2005 Maximus is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 11%
Syrah. Taste = aromas of dark cocoa, plum, ripe black cherry and hints of vanilla. On the palate
the wine displays fl avors of black cherry, plum, blueberry with layers of cinnamon, nutmeg and
cedar. Justin Winery is a family owned and operated winery making estate grown and produced
wines. The property was founded in 1981 by Justin and Deborah Baldwin when they planted their
160 acre property to the major Bordeaux varietals and created their Estate vineyard. The winery is
located in the Paso Robles appellation of California’s Central Coast. The region’s fi rst grapes were
planted in 1779 by Franciscan missionaries and today are home to the third highest concentration
of wineries in the United States. The 2006 Isosceles is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet
Franc and 5% Merlot. It was aged for 2 years in 65% new, French oak barrels. Taste = crushed,
fresh blackberries, cassis, mocha, caramel, vanilla and smoke; seamless, integrated tannins with a
hint of Mouton-like pencil lead notes in the finish. III.

GREAT REDS OF ITALY

2005 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Toscana
2001 Terre del Vulcano Taurasi, Lava, Campania
2003 Giulano Corino Barolo, Arborina, Piemonte

18.05

Avignonesi is composed of two farms, all located within the boundary of Montepulciano, on the
Argiano hills, where Avignonesi’s Vino Nobile has always been produced. The total land area is 175 acres. The 2005 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (mostly Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) with some Canaiolo and Mammolino) presents a richer, riper expression of black cherries, licorice and smoke, with purity andoutstanding balance. Taurasi is the only D.O.C.G. in Campania for red wine. The Taurasi district is up in the volcanic mountains east of Naples. The wines are 100% Aglianico, a deeply colored, thick-skinned variety that was brought to the Italian peninsula by the Greeks. It’s name is derived from the term hellenico (Greek). Terre del Vulcano is a team of two brothers who make an array of wines that include the Taurasi, Agliancio Irpinia, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avelino and Falanghina. Taste notes include black cherries, black currants, leather and cigar box. Brothers Renato and Giuliano Corino decided to divide their vineyards and work separately starting with the 2001 vintage. The winemaking style here is modern, with fermentations lasting under a week and aging taking place in barriques of which 40% are new for the single vineyard wines… The 2001 Barolo Arborina, from a vineyard made famous by the Corinos’ neighbor and mentor Elio Altare, is another worthy effort. A deeply colored ruby, it presents an aromatic nose of menthol, spices and minerals. This richly structured Barolo is dense and long, with generous fl avors of sweet dark red fruit, toasted oak, chocolate and the harder tannins that are typical of the Arborina vineyard.

PINOT IN THE MORNING - PINOT IN THE EVENING...

2006 Jermann Pinot Nero, Red Angel On The Moonlight, Venezia Giulia
2007 Maranet Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
2007 Prima Pinot Noir, Hirsch Vineyard, Sonoma Coast

15.70

Silvio Jermann made Italian wine history. This is particularly true of his whites, spearheaded by
such cult items as Vintage Tunina and Dreams. The marls and sandstone soils of his area contain
a racky sub-stratum. The latter evolved into what the locals call ponca, a Friulian word for marl
that is typical of the Collio area. Taste = reminiscent of cherries, raspberries, dried rose petals,
strawberries and plums confi rmed on an elegant, well balanced palate. Maranet is the second
label of DuMOL; the fruit that goes into the Maranet is from younger vines whose fruit will go into the regular DuMOL bottling later on; or from barrels of DuMOL’s Pinots that are not included in the fi rst wine. Taste = red cherry, raspberry, and a little blueberry, with a low oak profi le. First
planted in 1980 by farmer David Hirsch, the Hirsch Vineyard is located on the mountain ridges
above the northern California town of Fort Ross at 1500 feet above the ocean surface and 3.5 miles
as the crow fl ies. One of the pioneers of a region known as the Extreme Sonoma Coast, this 72-
acre vineyard is planted mostly with Pinot Noir which thrives above the fog line in the unique and powerful mix of sunlight and cool ocean breezes. Within several years of its planting, the vineyard was recognized as one of the top sources of Pinot Noir in the country. Marcasin and Kistler are just a few of the neighbors. Prima was lucky enough to compile a cuvee from some of David’s top barrels and we are very proud to annouce the release of our own wine. Taste = elegant nose of raspberries, cherries, and crushed herb aromas. The mouth shows elegance, gorgeously textured fl avors of raspberry, red apple skin, hints of citrus oil on a light base of wood. IV.

SUPER TUSCANS

Sassicaia may have been the fi rst ‘Super Tuscan.’ Tignanello offi cially gets that title from the 1970s when it was named by the press as a ‘Super Tuscan’ instead of vino da tavola or table wine. This is not an offi cial classifi cation. It is meant to represent a more world-styled wine – clean and usually having more oak than the classical wine of the district. They may be made by a Chianti house, etc. They can be pure Sangiovese or can be a French varietal or a blend of both.

SOUTHERN MAREMMA

Super Tuscans started in the Maremma, an area centered around the town of Grosseto on the southern Tuscan coast. The northern Maremma, i.e. Bolgheri, etc.,is home to the great wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The southern zone is different, hotter and is viewed separately.

VENETO, FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA & TRENTINO

The Veneto is in northeastern Italy is home to Valpolicella, Amarone (the dried grape version) and
Bardolino. These wines are made from the Corvina grape with others such as Molinar and Rondinella). There are some other wines including international grapes. Friuli and Trentino-Alto have many indigenous and international grapes.

UMBRIA & EMILIA ROMAGNA

Umbria has two DOCGs. Torgiano Rosso Riserva is made from Sangiovese and Canaiolo. Lungarotti is the most prestigious producer. The great local balck grape is Sagrantino. It is dark, intense and wonderful. Emilia Romagna is reknown for Sangiovese and this area may well be its true birthplace. Also there’s Lambrusco.

ABRUZZI & MOLISE

These two regions were at one time considered one zone. Since the D.O.C. laws in 1963 Abruzzi &
Molise are actually separate appellations. Montepulciano is the key grape.

CAMPANIA

Aglianco is the top red grape; especially in Taurasi (the region’s only D.O.C.G. for red wine). Piedirosso grapes are typical of the coastal zones. Naples is the capital.

PUGLIA

The heel of the boot of Italy, Puglia runs neck and neck with Sicily for the title of Italy’s most prolific wine producer. Only a small percentage of Puglia’s wine is bottled and/or classifi ed as D.O.C. Negroamaro is the most widely planted grape in the region and Primitivo, related to Zinfandel, is one of the Italian stars of American restaurants.

BASILICATA

The ankle above the boot, Basilicata’ Agliancio del Vuture is the other great zone for Aglianico.
2005 Elena Fucci Aglianico del Vulture, ‘Titolo’

SARDEGNA

SICILIA

Sicily is the hottest, driest region in Italy. The great indigeous black grape is Nero d’Avola.
